A frosty rime Essay Early in the book the reader is encouraged to take a negative view of Scrooge through the following type of descriptions And even Scrooge was not so dreadfully cut up by the sad event, but he was an excellent man of business on the day of the funeral, this quotation shows that Scrooge is so cold and disrespectful that he would prefer to attend his business than go to his sole friend, and partners funeral. He was supposed to be the sole mourner at Marleys funeral, which makes you pity Marley that no one was mourning his death and despise Scrooge for being so mean and not paying his respects to his dead friend and partner. Dickens paints a picture of Scrooge in your head with a string of rapid adjectives such as a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! This use of negative descriptive language immediately creates an image of him, which makes the reader dislike him. Dickens uses words that relate to cold in his descriptions of scrooge, The cold within him froze, A frosty rime, chill, No wind that blew was bitterer and so on. He uses the word cold to put forward a view of Scrooge as a dark, cold, bitter person, and often reminds us of this by using these words throughout the beginning of the text. In fact between the pages 11 and 13 there are at least 30 words that are associated with the word cold. Most people enjoy Christmas but not Scrooge, whats Christmas but a time for paying bills without money; a time for finding yourself a year older, but not an hour richer; a time for balancing your books and having every item in em through a round dozen of months presented dead against you. This outburst of bad points about Christmas shocks the reader. How can anyone despise Christmas so much? This makes you question whether he has any emotions at all. We feel even more against Scrooge when he asked why his nephew got married and in reply his nephew answered, Because I fell in love. Then Scrooge replied, as if that were the only one thing in the world more ridiculous than merry Christmas. So for all the romantics out there this is a very cold, heartless thing to say. There is a complete dichotomy between Scrooge and his nephew one a kind, caring, cheerful man the other a cold, greedy, lonely man Scrooge said one of the meanest comments in the book after being asked to give a donation to the poor. He asked whether prisons and workhouses were still open and why the poor werent there. The men answered, Many cant go there; and many would rather die. And Scrooge said spitefully, If they would rather die they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population . At this point we have developed strong negative emotions and thoughts towards Scrooge. Even though the beginning of the story is packed with negative feelings about Scrooge there are some points where you sympathize with him Nobody ever stopped him in the street to say, with gladsome looks, My dear Scrooge, how are you? When will you come and see me? This partly explains why he has turned out the way he has as he is very lonely. This leads us to reflect on his childhood. He had a very lonely and neglected childhood, A solitary child, neglected by his friends, is left there still. You cant neglect children (this was a serious issue in Victorian Britain) and expect them to grow into caring adults. There are clear parallels between the lonely Christmases of his childhood and Scrooges current lifestyle, solitary as an oyster, thin lips blue. We understand and sympathize with Scrooge when the ghost of Marley haunts him, Marleys ghost is a stereotypical Victorian ghost, rattling chains, wailing etc. Most people would be scared if his or her dead partner and friend came back to them as a ghost. So was Scrooge although he makes out he had no emotions, Scrooge trembled more and more. Marley tried to warn Scrooge not to make the same mistake he did, I am here to-night to warn you, that you have yet a chance and hope of escaping my fate. Yet Scrooge still refuses to listen which shows he is stubborn, I I think Id rather not, But we can understand this, as he is very scared. In stave four we are looking through scrooges eyes at people who are criticising him. We sympathise with Scrooge when the men are discussing the dead man who we assume is Scrooge. We assume this because they imply the person is very stingy even when dead, Its likely to be a very cheap funeral. And that he is rich What has he done with his money. These men are very hypocritical. They are very rich yet they are bickering over Scrooges wealth. These men are mocking and laughing at this dead man and then considering just going to the funeral if food is provided, I dont mind if lunch is provided. This quotation shows that they have no respect for this man and makes us pity him. In the final stave there is a lot of humour behind Scrooge. He has become a kind, giving, joyful man, I am as light as a feather, as happy as an angel, as merry as a schoolboy. I am as giddy as a drunken man. This quotation makes us laugh at Scrooge, but also with him. The reader shifts his emotions and sympathies for Scrooge from disliking him at the beginning of the book, to not being bothered what happens to him towards the middle and finally sympathizing with him by the end.

It has largely influenced the way we communicate and the way information exchange is facilitated in today's world. The modern world has been shaped by its metaphysics, which has shaped its education, which in turn has brought forth its science and technology. So, without going back to metaphysics and education, we can say that the modern world has been shaped by technology. It tumbles from crisis to crisis; on all sides there are prophecies of disaster and, indeed, visible signs of breakdown. If that which has been shaped by technology, and continues to be so shaped, looks sick, it might be wise to have a look at technology itself. If technology is felt to be becoming more and more inhuman, we might do well to consider whether it is possible to have something better-a technology with a human face. This is the era of computer (information technology); every action of human being has become mechanized. One of the bad element of this computerized age is that human being is gradually become substitute computer. The actual hazard is not that computer will start to thinking like human, but that human will start thinking and act like computer. It is dread that human will be totally assistant to technology (Lin & Atkin, 2007). Conclusion In general, Mr. Harris is using his quote to make us humans more aware of the real danger and its consequences. He is trying to get us off what most of us believe that the real danger is that computers will begin to think like humans. However, he is trying to turn us around and make us apprehend that, in fact, it is the opposite, that if we as humans begin to think like computers, the consequences will be far more severe. Let’s start off by talking about America’s health crisis. I.Number one reason to be conscious of your eating habits is to watch out for your health. A. Obesity is the number two cause of preventable death according to the behavioral risk factor surveillance system (CDC, 2010) 1. In 2005-2006 67% Americans 20 years or older were overweight or obese(CDC, 2010). 2. Being overweight or obese leads to increased risk of breast cancer, cardiovascula r diseases, type II diabetes and many others(Insel, 2006) 3. Can be prevented by monitoring how many calories you eat and how much daily activity you perform. B. In 2007 23. 6 million people had been diagnosed with diabetes (CDC, 2010). . 90-95% of them had type II (mayo clinic, 2009) 2. Diabetes can be prevented by consuming a variety of foods, controlling portions, getting adequate fiber, and 30 minutes of moderate exercise (mayo clinic, 2009) II. Advertisements are affecting our food choices. A. I believe that if we are more aware of what we are seeing and hearing in ads, we can control how food advertisements effect us 1. Media sometimes sensationalizes and over-simplifies nutrition related topics to increase viewers and products sales (Insel, 2006) B. Most ads promote food that is high in calories, fats and sugars (CSPI, 2009). . 90% of commercials on Saturday morning programs are promoting junk food or fast food(CSPI, 2009) 2. Only 2% of all commercials are fruits, vegetables, and whole grains (CSPI, 2009) III. Reading labels is the number one step to being more conscious of your food choices. A. Pay attention to the ingredient 1. The ingredients listed are always in descending order according to the amount by weight used in the product. 2. It is best to choose the food product with the least ingredients and you should know what those ingredients are because these foods are the least processed (Wright). . Best to avoid food that contain dyes because it is the same dyes used in materials (Wright). a. Some common food dyes such as yellow 5 and red 40 have been linked to hyperactivity, impulsivity, learning difficulties, and ADHD in children (CSPI, 2009). b. There are plenty of natural dyes such as beta carotene, beet root red, and paprika that can be used (CSPI, 2009). B. Health claims are not the same as function claims. 1. Health claims are FDA regulated where as function claims are not (Wright). 2.A health claim simply states that a food is high in a nu trient such as calcium or fiber; function claim states that the food will do something such as burn fat or boost immunity. 3. This means that function claims are not always true because they have not been thoroughly tested. IV. Be aware that fad diets are not the answer to healthy nutrition; only lifestyle changes are. 1. According to the American heart association (2010), fad diets are not nutritionally balanced. a. They mostly focus on one food or nutrient which defeats the number one principle of nutrition: eat a wide variety of food. b.It is not possible to get all your nutrients from one food (AHA, 2010). i. Carbohydrates are needed for energy. ii. Protein to needed create hormones such as insulin. iii. Fat needed to keep us warm and protect organs. 2. Diana Wright, registered dietitian, says that fad diets lack exercise, claim unrealistic weight loss, and aren’t based on facts. It’s no mystery that what we eat has an effect on our lives, but yet we still fail to be conscious of what we take in. I think it’s important for all of you to start making better food choices today by being aware of the health risks, ads, fad diet gimmicks, and reading labels.If we can start new healthy habits now, they may be harder to break down the road. This type of punishment can and will hurt your pocket. It will cost you a lot of money to replace or fix what is broken. 2. Insurance will increase a. â€Å"Anyone that is found to be involved in an auto accident where alcohol was a contributing factor can expect more dire consequences. The inability to get hired due to DUI a.It is safe to assume that job opportunities which require the use of corporation vehicles are no longer open to those individuals convicted of driving under the influence. 4. Drinking and driving is not the only option you have, there are services out there that can get you and others home safely. IV. How to avoid drunk driving A. Driving home intoxicated is not the answer, be a smart, save your life or another’s life. Conclusion: Raise your hand if your life is important enough to you, not to drink and drive. Keep your hand up if your friend’s life is also important enough to you, not to drink and drive.I hope the information I have given you has made your knowledge of driving under the influence more clear. Thousands of people our age die every day due to alcohol related accidents. I hope you will use the knowledge of calculating your blood alcohol content that it might keep you from getting behind the wheel. Atwoods Tricks With Mirrors as a Declaration of Female Independence Relationships are complex things, with ever-changing dynamics. Some traditional roles are always played in the constant search for balance between giving and taking in relationships. Women have historically and stereotypically played the role of giver in male-female romantic unions. At the same time, though, she writes with an open-handed honesty - she is simply a mirror telling her story, it seems. It faces strong competition from Nike, Adidas and Under Armour and has adopted various business level strategies to expand its geographic market and to have an edge over its competitors (Car Newell, 2014). Lululemon maintains high quality standards in its products which in turn has resulted in increased loyalty among the customers towards the brand. 1.The primary competitors of Lululemon include Adidas, Nike, Under Armour and VF Corp. and continuously face challenges and potential threats from its competitive environment. These competitors are unrivaled in terms of their global success as a result of their high performance products. These are financially powerful brands as compared to Lululemon and also provide diversified range of products (Schlossberg Lutz, 2016). But the competitive advantage for Lululemon lies in the fact that these brands are unproven in the yoga segment and they only provide limited focus on the yoga line. Therefore, Lululemon is capable of attracting the yoga enthusiasts since it creates value for its customers which could not be replicated by big brands like Adidas and Nike (CSI Market, 2017). Lululemons competitive advantage lies in the differentiation strategy in which unique materials are chosen in order to create products that attract the customers with their comfortable fitness and daily wear range. The organizational culture adopted by Lululemon is unique and therefore acts as the source of competitive advantage. The efficiency that it possesses due to outsourcing and technological advances in various processes relating to its online store has kept it a step ahead of its competitors.
